History of the Charlotte Fire Department

Charlotte Fire Department numbers their rigs based on the station number. This helps limit confusion regarding what companies are responding the incident and to assist the incident commander on where the rigs are responding from (travel distance). Stations that house two companies of the same type (ex. Engines), one engine will be the station number, the second engine will be a 60's series number. In the early years, the department thought it would be safe to number rigs in the 20's as expansion to more than 20 stations did not seem viable.

The Charlotte Fire Department operates out of 43 fire stations and provides fire protection for approximately 850,000 people living in a 311 square-mile area
• 43 Engine Companies and 16 Ladder Companies
• 1,230 full time positions; of those 1,056 are civil service sworn personnel

History of Station 11

Station 11 was built and activated on June 16, 1959, at 620 West 28th Street, to protect the industrial and residential properties along North Graham Street and Interstate 85.

It is one of 43 fire stations for the Charlotte Fire Department and one of two rescue stations that house our Heavy Rescue.

Station 11 originally housed Car 4, later renamed Battalion 2, Engine 11 and Engine 14, later re-numbered Engine 23 then Engine 63. With the inception of CFD's USAR program, station 11 housed 2 small tractor drawn USAR trucks and an Engine company. Members from the Engine would cross the floor and respond on the USAR rigs when called as they are not staffed with additional members.

In 2021, the USAR trucks and members moved to Station 43 while the Engine and Rescue housed at Station 3 relocated to Station 11. This move occurred in large part to data received from the Strategic Planning Office that identified gaps in response times throughout the City.

History of Rescue 11. In 1974, Engine 20 (the second engine located at station 1) was disbanded and the formation of Squad 1 was established. Squad One was a manpower unit originally with three members and an Officer, later increased to a total of five personnel per day. Their first apparatus was a GMC Van. From 1991 Squad 1 moved from Station 1 to Station 14, then to Station 3 (where it was renamed Rescue 3) and then to Station 11 (now Rescue 11).

In 1980, the Department disbanded two engine companies in response to the City Council’s direction to cut expenses. Engine 61, the second engine company at Station 4, and Engine 63, the second engine company at Station 11, were taken out of service in June 1980. In August 2003, Battalion 2 moved from Station 11 to Station 27 to cover the northeast quadrant of the city.

In the near future, it will be replaced by a modern, state-of-the-art facility to better serve the community's needs. During this timeframe, Engine 11 will relocate to station 4 and Rescue 11 will relocate to station 1. This relocation will be temporary until the new station is ready to move in.
